How I Finally Took Control of My Health and Well-being.
As a busy working mom, I know how hard it is to take care of yourself- and when you do, maybe you feel guilty about all the other things (and people) in your life that need your attention. Intellectually, you understand the “you can’t pour from an empty cup” metaphor, but you have no idea how the heck you can fill your cup with everything else you have to do.
I get it. I have been there.
I know how overwhelming it can be to suffer from constant stress, low sex drive and uncontrollable mood swings.
About 5 years ago, I had quit a very stable job to learn an entirely new set of skills in a very demanding job. I loved the work, but the pace was intense. I was working 12 hour days, researching and studying at night. I also had a 1 year old at home and my husband was building his business.
I was living on caffeine, often skipping lunches and supplementing with protein bars and shakes.
My stress level was at an all time high, I had insufferable mood swings and I was so. damn. tired.- but when I would finally lay down at night exhausted, I was wired and couldn’t fall asleep, even after a glass of wine or 2.
When I was home with my son, I just didn’t have the motivation or energy to go out and do fun things, and my patience (like my libido) was nowhere to be found. I kept thinking things would get better. I would start to feel better- but I just felt worse.
I did some research, and I learned things like food and lifestyle had a tremendous effect on hormones. So maybe I wasn’t losing my mind! I wondered if I was feeling this way, with all that I know, were other women feeling this way too?
As I started to talk about this more, women would say…
“Why doesn’t anyone talk about this stuff? Why didn’t anyone tell me this would happen? Is this normal? Am I normal? I am scared to do the wrong thing. I’m overwhelmed. I don’t know where to start.”
It was clear that women needed more information about the changes our bodies go through from motherhood to menopause.
They say you tend to specialize in areas you need yourself. I enrolled in the Integrative Women’s Health Institute to help myself and in turn help other women. A little over a year later, I was certified as a Women’s Health Coach feeling much more in control, and a whole lot happier.
I learned the hard way so you don’t have to. Instead of constantly trying to find unattainable “balance,” I created a plan that works with me and my life. My life is not all sunshine and rainbows, and I get off track all of the time…because …LIFE. Because as a person living on this planet, life is going to happen; kids are going to get sick, too many meetings are going to get scheduled, etc, etc.
What’s changed is that I have a plan that I know I can begin to implement tomorrow to get me back on track. I know what works for my body and lifestyle and can stop obsessing over the next fad diet and the pretty social media posts.
You can feel better too; in control of your health and have a plan. A plan that you can keep going back to when life seems to derail your best intentions. You can stop feeling bad about “falling off track” and start feeling empowered to move forward regardless.
